Windows 7 Vidding
So I made a handful of vids back in the day (2006-2009) and am now determined to get back into it. I used to vid in Windows XP but have since upgraded to Windows 7. I know vidding tech and specs can change a lot in a very short time, so:
1. I would appreciate any software recs from other Win 7 vidders! My old Ulead software isn't compatible anymore so now is the time to learn something new!
2. Anyone know of good recent tech tutorial posts out there? A lot of stuff I'm finding is really out of date. Basically need to re-learn how to clip, what kind of files I should download, that kind of thing. And all those fancy settings to get my vids to look pretty.
Thanks in advance for any kind of help/advice! :)

I finally decided to take the plunge and try to figure out how to make fanvids, but I ran into a snag almost right away. I figured out how to rip files from my DVDs using DVD Shrink, but they are in .vod format, and Windows Movie Maker won't recognize them. I used VirtualDub-MPEG to convert one to .avi, but WMM wouldn't open that one either. What am I doing wrong, and is there a free file converter that will fix my problem?

Hi there. :)
I'm Joanna, and I decided this week to start vidding, because I just couldn't get a fanfic idea to work out. I had a vid idea in my head for months and decided to run with it.
I've figured out the software well enough, but I'm still having some small technical issues that I'm seeking help with. Other than that, I just want to get some constructive criticism to help me get better. I have a preview
of the video I'm focusing most on uploaded on my youtube. If any of you would be so kind as to give me some feedback (and be as brutal as you can, that'd be awesome), I would greatly appreciate it. It's a Dean/Castiel video, if that helps anyone decide whether or not they want to watch it.
Thanks so much!

I've been struggling with a vid I'm working on. It's character piece about Emily Thorne from the TV show "Revenge." I've been working on it quite a bit and I feel like it's actually getting worse
. lol. You can watch it streaming below the cut.( vimeoCollapse )
I'd be really grateful for anyone who could give concrit on this!

I'm currently attempting to teach myself how to use Adobe Premiere CS5.5 with the view of eventually giving basic instruction to other people how to use it.
What better way to practise than
making a fan vid? Anyway I have some downloaded TV eps in .avi format and I have a couple of questions -
Do I need to use a clipping program as well?
Do I need to import a codec converter?
Any help or links to Premiere for dummies are greatly appreciated! :D

Hey guys, I'm quite new to this community, and actually, to live journal as a whole. I came here looking for fellow vidders, to talk about vidding and this kind of stuff.
I'm not a very good vidder, but I'm trying to improve, so I'm posting a link for the most recent video I made, and perhaps you could please give some feedback? I'm mean, some constructive criticism and so....
Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-gde7X_F78
It's about the character Mystique, from X men First Class, set with the song Beautiful Lie, By 30 seconds to Mars.
Thank you for you attention :D

I was hoping I could find a kind soul on here who could help me out. I've been trying for the past few weeks to figure this vidding stuff out, but after hours of fruitless effort I just keep getting frustrated and giving up every time.
I have never made fanvids before, so I'm as new as they come. Anyway, here's what I'm dealing with... Basically, I've downloaded a bunch of .avi TV episodes (using utorrent), so I'm not working directly from a DVD (and most of the tutorials I've found assume you're getting your source material from DVDs), and I'm wondering why these episodes are not showing up at all when I try to open them in mpeg streamclip. I'm getting no video (white screen) AND no sound. Nothing at all. Is it because I need to convert it somehow BEFORE opening it in mpeg streamclip? I've hit a brick wall, here.
Also, if I have Adobe CS5, which program would be the best for me to use for making fanvids? I'm knowledgeable when it comes to Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, but have yet to venture further into CS5's depths. Any advice would be much appreciated! :)
PS: One more thing! Just to make this even more compliated, I downloaded the episodes onto a PC, but plan to do all of the editing on my Macbook Pro. Should I just move the .avi files over to the Mac first instead of trying to mess with them on the PC? Current Mood: confused

Feedback request: or, newbie's first vid!
I completed my first vid
a couple days ago. For values of "completed" that just mean the timeline is filled with the clips I want to use and what feels like the right song and I've actually managed to figure out how to do the transitions I want. But the timing of cuts! In particular, making the cuts work with the song better. Oh goodness. I have to go in and clean up certain clips (for instance, I think the two scenes I open with need to be intercut rather than going from one to the next), but timing
is the albatross around my neck.
There's two things I'm really worried about and hoping to get feedback on:
1. Whether the mix of quick cuts and dip to black works. If not, any advice on a better way to approach it? I was trying to use quick cuts to suggest more action-y moments, and dip to black to indicate reflection on the part of the vid's POV character. But IDK if that feels right to the viewer.
2. If the timing of the cuts is even remotely working and, when it isn't, specifics about why. Advice on how to approach thinking about that or recs for resources on it. I've found some on my own, but somehow it's just not clicking.
I'm using Adobe Premiere, so advice or resources that's adaptable to that would be the most helpful.
ETA: Oh! And one other thing. The torments of talky face! There were some clips where there was dialogue in there because I couldn't have the clip without some talk-face. And other moments where I hoped that the talky-face would actually fit (i.e. the bad guy clearly saying "time's up" as the clip transitions to Bad Things happening, Sarah shouting "no!"). But I'm wondering if it all just feels regrettable and awkward. I'm hoping to know if there are moments where it does work. That way I can take out the ones where it doesn't but keep some of what I hoped to have in there.

Not Only Human (Roswell, Max/Tess | My first fanvid!)
Not Only HumanArtist:
Max/Tess kissing. This is the first video I've ever made. I used an early version of iMovie and Garage Band for editing the song. Please be kind. I'm such a newb.
Warnings: Considering it's been so long since these scenes aired on TV, I don't think a spoiler alert is needed. Still, spoilers from mid-season two onward.( Read more...Collapse )

help with mpeg streamclip?
Hey, all. I'm on a Mac (OS X 10.4.11, PPC). So, I've used MPEG Streamclip for a while to cut down clips before I import them into iMovie and it's always worked great. Have been using version 1.9.3b4 with no problem...
...until my computer crashed due to an unrelated problem, and I had to get my hard drive wiped. I had to re-download all my codecs and everything.
Quicktime (basic, don't have Pro) was having a problem playing some of my .avis, so I re-downloaded and installed Divx. Then, Quicktime played my .avis fine. (Which makes sense, since Quicktime said the files were encoded with Divx 5.0.)
But when I opened those .avi files in MPEG Streamclip, at first, I got no video, no sound. I downloaded and installed Xvid, Perian, the MPEG-2 playback component, and re-installed Divx. No video, no sound.
After I installed FlipForMac and moved the Divx delegate-thingy into the right folder (I had it in the wrong library), I got sound in Streamclip, but no video.
Also, Streamclip will play my .mov and .mp4 files just fine.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'd really like to be able to make clips. :(

Hi I'm Hatts :)
hi everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself. I love that there is a community for new vidders. I often feel lost out there in the world of so many experts : ). I started vidding this fall when I was off from work and I'm having a blast... My handle on youtube is Kelly1231301 but everywhere else on the internet I go as Hatts or Hatts8. I've been using WMM and Vidding mostly for TVD fandom. I can only keep so many downloads on my computer at a time so I stick to one show. eventually I'd like to switich to FNL... I also did a few vidlets for TBBT.
If anyone wants to trade vids- that is , you give your feedback on mine and I on yours I'd love that. Here is the URL for my lasted effort -- I Need You (to hold my sadness) -- Kathrine (Stefan): a character study -- Vampire Diaries

I've got a question, though I know I asked someone in the past. I use windows movie maker and everytime I save my vid there's a big green bar at the bottom of it. How do I make that go away?

Complete and total newbie
Hello everyone. I think I'm even more of a vidding newbie than most of the people I've seen posting in this comm so far. I've only ever made one video, and that was using still pictures and Windows Movie Maker because at the time I didn't have a fast enough internet connection to download videos.
The only video software I have is Windows Movie Maker and Nero 10. I have no idea where to start. I don't know how to make clips. I don't know how to manipulate the sound so that sometimes you hear the sound on the video clip and other times you hear just the music.
I do have DVD-ripping software (Magic DVD Ripper.)
My current thought is to make a Torchwood video using the Eurythmics song "I Saved the World Today", but like I said -- no idea where to start.
Are there any step-by-step tutorials out there that I could help me get started?

I am new to Sony vegas, I have made some fanvids and i uploaded them to youtube easily.
But i had to remove Vegas and installed it again for some reason and now when I render a vid not even 2 minutes long, it takes hours to upload onto youtube. I've tried uploading a video on someone elses internet but it does the same thing. Saying it will take like 17hrs to upload onto youtube.
Is there a way on Sony Vegas to make the files your render smaller in size?
Or an easier way to upload them onto youtube or something?

Up to date software for clipping scenes?
A friend innocently gave me an idea for a vid today, which had me digging out my burned disks and my Sony Vegas software to load it onto my new laptop and downloading a song to use...
I was all set to get started again (I haven't done a new vid in probably a year or so), and then put my burned to disk episodes into my DVD drive and opened up Virtual Dub (which I just downloaded from a website today) to start clipping.
My computer says that there's a full disk in the DVD drive, but when I try to open it with Virtual Dub, it's telling me "No Items Match Your Search", though I'm looking for files under "All Types".
A friend that used to vid suggested that maybe Virtual Dub is either out of date or incompatible with my computer (Windows 7). Can anybody here tell me, and/or suggest another clipping software? I really hate having this great vid idea burning into my brain and no outlet for it. Current Mood: confused

Premiere pro question
Very new to vidding, just getting my skills up at the moment :) I'm used to using Final Cut Pro at uni, but on my home PC was just given a copy of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. I'm finding many of the controls are the same, which is handy! My current question is that when I drag a selection into the session pane is there a way of ALWAYS having the video and audio unlinked? At the moment I'm just dragging in, right clicking on clip, unlinking and then deleting the audio, but I'm only a few seconds in and this is already getting tiresome! Any other handy premiere hints would be helpful :)
While I'm here, are there any handy guides around with tips on clip selection, basics, etc? I'm realising that as well formed as ones idea might be, when it comes down to sewing it together piece by piece and second by second one can lose sight of the project as a whole!
Thanks in advance, guys :D

DVD Decrypter large files
I have my SPN dvd's in my computer through DVD decrypter. Everytime I try to put any decrypted video in Sony Vegas 9 I get an error message immediately. I believe its possible the video is just big or too much information for the program.... does anybody know how I can cut the decrypted videos and vobs down in smaller snipits before I put them in Sony Vegas? Otherwise i have to sit there with a video camera and vid the snipits from the dvd's off the big screen tv....
Or also is there some community place online to get vid clips to make these videos?

VirtualDub clip quality
I am making my First Vid Ever and using VirtualDub 1.9.10 to get my clips, as I have been instructed. the problem is that when I play the new clips, the quality is noticeably downgraded from the source. is there a way to avoid this?
